About the Program

For professionals planning the next step in their careers, the Master of Science in Engineering and Applied Science prepares students for leadership roles in product innovation and entrepreneurship. Students in this full-time, on-campus program enroll in a comprehensive set of courses to gain a broad understanding of the end-to-end product development process and deep insights into emerging technologies.

What You Will Learn

The curriculum comprises a set of core courses including Human-Centered Design and UI/UX design, working with Data using Python, emerging problems in Tough Tech, Business Strategy and Leadership. The core curriculum gives students a broad foundation to prepare for a technical leadership role. Building on that foundation, students add 12 elective credits to build the deeper understanding needed to innovate and lead in one of the following areas of concentration:

  • Medical Device Design
  • AI and Machine Learning
  • Supply Chain, Retail, and Service Systems
  • Robotics and Smart Machines
  • Climate, Energy, and Sustainability
  • Software Systems
  • Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology

Students are also able to customize their concentration by enrolling in elective courses at Columbia University’s other schools, such as the Graduate School of Business and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
